Waalk is made by one person in Perth, Australia. It connects your walking pad to your iPhone and writes your walks to Apple Health. This page explains what the app touches and what it does not.

What Waalk stores on your iPhone

• Walk records: start and end times, belt distance, elapsed time, estimated steps, and per minute samples. These stay on your iPhone so a walk can be retried into Health if a save fails.
• Settings: your stride length, body weight if you enter one, your daily step goal, and the remembered pad.

Apple Health

With your permission, Waalk writes Indoor Walk workouts, step samples, walking distance, and active energy to Apple Health, and reads your body weight and daily step totals to show your goal. Health data never leaves your device through Waalk. Waalk does not read other apps' workouts, and it never rewrites data written by other sources.

Bluetooth

Waalk uses Bluetooth only to talk to your walking pad. Your walks stay on your iPhone. If you leave anonymous usage data switched on, the model of pad you connect to is counted, which is described under Anonymous usage data below.

Anonymous usage data

Waalk works with one treadmill it was built for and, in principle, with any machine that speaks the same two Bluetooth protocols. There is no way to know which machines people actually own, or which ones fail, without counting them. Waalk uses PostHog, hosted in the European Union, to count a small number of things. You can switch this off in Settings, under Privacy, and nothing is sent when it is off.

What is counted:

• The model of walking pad you connect to, reduced to a short label such as "toputure_tp8" or "kingsmith_walkingpad". The Bluetooth name your pad advertises is never sent, because people sometimes put their own name in it. A machine Waalk does not recognise is counted only as "unknown".
• Which Bluetooth protocol the pad speaks, which services it offers, and whether Waalk could read it. This is how unsupported machines get found and fixed.
• Whether a walk saved to Apple Health succeeded or failed, and a short reason code if it failed.
• Whether the unlock screen was shown, and whether an unlock succeeded or failed. No price, no receipt, no payment details, and cancelling the screen is not recorded at all.

What is never sent:

• Your name, your email, your location, or any account information.
• Anything from inside a walk: no distances, no step counts, no durations, no dates, no Health data.
• The Bluetooth name of your pad or of any other device near you.
• Your advertising identifier. Waalk does not read it.

There is no profile. Waalk never tells PostHog who you are, so the counts cannot be tied back to a person or followed from one day to the next. The only identifier is a random one the analytics library generates for the install, which is deleted if you switch anonymous usage data off.

Head to head challenges

If you choose to create or join a challenge, the challenge code, the name you type, the challenge window, and your step total for that window are stored in iCloud so the other person can see the score. This uses your own iCloud account through Apple's CloudKit. Waalk has no server of its own and cannot see this data.

What Waalk does not do

• No Waalk account. There is nothing to sign up for.
• No tracking, no advertising identifiers, no ad networks.
• No selling or sharing of data with anyone.

This website

waalk.app uses Umami, a self hosted, cookieless page counter. It records which pages are viewed, the referrer, and the country and browser type. It sets no cookies, stores no IP addresses, and cannot identify you. Nothing on this website is linked to the app: Umami counts website visits, the app's anonymous usage data counts app events, and the two are never joined.

Purchases

The unlock is an in-app purchase handled by Apple. Waalk sees only whether the purchase exists, never your payment details. If anonymous usage data is on, Waalk also counts that an unlock was shown and whether it went through, as described under Anonymous usage data. Nothing about your payment is included.

Questions about privacy or the app go through the support form. There is no email address to harvest and no tracking on that form either.
